Enterprise AI Assistants: Microsoft 365 Copilot vs Google Gemini Enterprise vs ChatGPT Enterprise vs Claude Enterprise

Once you have decided to buy an employee assistant rather than build one, the choice narrows to four platforms. Microsoft 365 Copilot and Google Gemini win on depth inside the productivity suite you already run; ChatGPT Enterprise and Claude Enterprise are suite-neutral and compete on model quality, connectors and agent tooling. The governance differences (where data is processed, what is logged, which features fall outside residency or BAA scope) matter more than benchmark gaps. Choose by where your documents and identities live, then check the governance fine print.

What we're comparing

  • Microsoft's paid Copilot add-on for Microsoft 365, grounded in Microsoft Graph (mail, files, chats, meetings) and governed through Entra ID and Purview. Copilot Chat is the no-extra-cost tier.

  • Gemini is included in Google Workspace Business and Enterprise plans (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet); Gemini Enterprise is Google Cloud's separately licensed agent platform with cross-suite connectors, including Microsoft 365.

  • OpenAI's enterprise ChatGPT workspace: OpenAI frontier models, connected apps, workspace agents, Codex, and a Compliance API. Suite-neutral.

  • Anthropic's enterprise Claude plan: one seat covers Claude chat, Claude Code and Cowork, with MCP-based custom connectors and Claude add-ins for Microsoft 365. Suite-neutral.

When to use which

  • Use Microsoft 365 Copilot

You run on Microsoft 365 and Entra ID and your governance program already lives in Purview. Best fit at early-to-mid maturity, when the goal is broad productivity uplift with the least new governance surface. Fix SharePoint oversharing before rollout.

  • Use Google Gemini

You are a Workspace shop: Gemini is already in your licenses, so start there. Add Gemini Enterprise when you need cross-system agents and connectors (including Microsoft 365) on a Google Cloud governance stack.

  • Use ChatGPT Enterprise

You want a suite-neutral assistant with OpenAI models, strong employee familiarity, and shared workspace agents. Good for mixed Microsoft/Google estates. Budget for third-party DLP and check which features fall outside data residency.

  • Use Claude Enterprise

You want one seat covering chat, coding (Claude Code) and delegated work (Cowork), with MCP as the integration standard. Fits orgs at mid-to-high maturity that can manage usage-based spend and want Claude inside Excel, Word and Outlook without switching suites.

FAQs

  • Should we standardize on one enterprise AI assistant?

Standardize on one default for the whole workforce, usually the one bundled with your productivity suite, and allow a second, suite-neutral assistant for power users (engineering, analytics, research). Two governed assistants beat one sanctioned tool plus widespread shadow AI. More than two multiplies governance work without clear benefit.

  • Do these vendors train models on our data?

All four state that enterprise prompts and outputs are not used for training by default. The real governance gaps are elsewhere: third-party model subprocessors (Microsoft processes Anthropic models outside the EU Data Boundary, and its Word / Excel / PowerPoint setting is on by default for EU, EFTA and UK tenants created after 25 March 2026, so check your tenant), connectors and MCP servers that send data outside the vendor's residency or BAA scope, and retention settings left at their defaults. Review those three items in every contract.

  • Do Copilot and Gemini still lock you into one model?

Less than before. Microsoft 365 Copilot can use Anthropic Claude alongside OpenAI models, and Gemini Enterprise lets admins enable Claude models. ChatGPT Enterprise and Claude Enterprise only offer their own vendor's models. If model choice matters, check which model each feature actually uses, not just the model picker.

  • How do we compare cost across per-seat and usage-based pricing?

Model a 12-month total using real activity data from a pilot. Per-seat add-ons are predictable but waste money on inactive licenses; usage-based plans (Claude Enterprise, metered Copilot agents, ChatGPT credits, Gemini partner models) shift risk to heavy users and need spend limits. Agent usage is increasingly metered separately from the seat on every platform.
